The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are protected from temporary immersion in fresh water up to a depth of 1.5m for 30 minutes. However, neither of the devices is completely waterproof.
We recommend keeping the foldables away form water, and here’s why:
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 are IPX8 water-resistant.
The former number stands for dust resistance, and the latter number (8) stands for water resistance.
As I said, the number 8 means that the device can withstand complete immersion. However, it’s important to note that devices protected only against fresh water and any chemicals, such as chlorine in a swimming pool, can damage the sealing against water, making water damage probable.
The ‘X’ for the dust-resistance states that both the Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 aren’t officially protected against dust. Know how to minimize the probability of dust ingress to your new foldable device.
In real-life scenarios where you accidentally or intentionally expose your device to water, it may not be free of other substances or chemicals. Although it can withstand occasional exposure to those, it’s never recommended to intentionally expose your expensive foldables to water, as over time deterioration might happen with the water-protected sealing and may lead to water damage.
Any minor damage to the device may also leave some place for the water to sneak inside, which you might not even realize before it happens, and water damage is usually not protected under any warranty. So we recommend keeping your expensive foldables away from water as much as possible, even if it mentions being protected.
Measures to protect from them form water damage:
No matter how careful you are, sometimes life may have different plans for you. If water gets into the device, you may see water droplets condensing in front of the camera lenses as the phone warms up during use.
As you notice water has made its way inside the phone, you should immediately stop using your device, power it off, and take it to an authorized service center for repair. Using your phone while water is on the mainboard may not pose any problem instantly but may cause a lot more damage to it as time passes by. Getting it repaired at the earliest will actually benefit you even if it’s not covered under warranty.
By powering the device off and getting it to the service center when water gets inside, you can avoid damage to the mainboard, which saves you a lot more money.
