Reportedly, Samsung has cancelled the variable zoom camera module for the S24 Ultra. Instead, the device will retain the familiar 4-camera configuration seen in the previous three generations. Although they have cancelled the plan for good reasons.

It’s been a while since the release of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and leaks and rumors about the S24 Ultra have already started coming out. Various reliable sources are suggesting that Samsung is going to make some notable changes to the successor of the S23 Ultra.
A 3-10x variable folded telephoto is rumored to swap the two different telephoto modules while the 200MP ISOCELL HP2 continues to serve as the main sensor. With the advantage of true optical zooming and the 200MP sensor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will reportedly bring a 150X zoom which is a big improvement over the S22 Ultra.
Famous Samsung insider and leaker Ice universe suggested that Samsung is going to cut down the 3x telephoto module this time, offering a triple camera setup. Later, he mentioned this ‘new solution’ to be a variable folded periscope telephoto that implements a zooming mechanism similar to professional cameras inside the tiny space of a smartphone.
Another reliable leaker Revegnus also tweeted about this variable folded telephoto which is supposed to cover the entire zoom range of 3-10x through movement of the optical equipment.
This new telephoto module can finally bring true lossless zoom throughout it’s entire range.
Since the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung has used the same 108MP sensor in each iteration. While each of them has brought significant improvement to the table, the key focus for improvement remained software processing.
And while this year’s flagship, S23 Ultra is better than it’s predecessors, it still has the potentiality to improve further, just like the previous versions.
That being said, they are most likely to keep improving with the 200MP sensor and not upgrading it too soon.
While having one less camera seems to be a downgrade, having a 3-10x variable folded telephoto is actually groundbreaking. Although, its still rumored and you should take it with a pinch of salt. Also, there’s no word about the ultrawide sensor so far.
