The Galaxy Z Fold 5 brings a new hinge design that protects the inside display from external substances while being closed. They call it the flex hinge.
The fifth generation of the Galaxy Fold is very similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with an improved hinge.
Hinge movement got more precise
Samsung’s foldables have been capable of staying in a position between folded and unfolded for additional functionality, such as resting the phone on the table to take selfies with several other flex mode features.
This time, you can adjust the angle of the hinge with even higher precision, improving the user experience.
Gapless hinge design
For quite a while, Samsung foldables were the only ones to have a gap in between when closed. From dust particles to pocket lint and smaller substances like coins, they could make their way inside the foldables through the gap. The hinge side is also 2.4mm thinner than the previous generation.
Although the phone is still quite a bit thicker as compared to some of it’s competitors like the Honor Magic V2, the thinnest foldable in the market right now.
Finally, with the fifth generation, they have designed a new hinge that shuts completely closed, leaving no such concerns. Aside from that, it also makes the device look more aesthetic and improves the in-hand feel, having the same thickness on both sides.
Now, as I just mentioned, some of its competitors like the Honor Magic V2 bring an even slicker form factor, you might have this question – How the Magic V2 holds it’s own as compared to the Galaxy Fold 5 in other aspects of a foldable?
Display gets more room to fold
In a foldable, one of the most concerning factors is the safety of the foldable display itself. The hinge mechanism should be capable enough to exert minimum stress on the inner display while opening and closing.
According to Samsung, they have designed the hinge to allow the display to fold with a larger radius of curvature. This feature allows the display to have fewer creases while also benefiting its longevity.
However, the crease still persists despite the newer hinge; probably this new technology needs some time to improve in terms of the display crease.
Additionally, the new hinge makes the phone 10 grams lighter and slightly thinner than its predecessor, all for the same $1799 as last year. But aside from the hinge, there’s not much difference this time, and that leads me to a question – is the Z Fold5 worth an upgrade over its predecessor?
