Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 are set to launch on July 26th at Galaxy Unpacked 2023

Galaxy Z Fold 5

We can feel the excitement for the fifth generation of foldables going up. Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen numerous rumors suggesting an earlier launch of the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 than expected. Usually, Samsung launches its foldables in August every year, but this time it’s set to be earlier.

The unpack event for the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 is going to be held on July 26, 2023, at COEX, Seoul, South Korea. This will be the first-ever foldable unpack event to be held in South Korea. The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 will be available for sale on August 11, 2023.

This early launch might be a result of the declining sales of the S23 series. The earlier launch of the latest foldables has the potential to increase revenue in Q3, 2023.

Improvements in Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5

The hinge mechanism in the Z Fold5 is different than last year’s model. Finally, the foldables from Samsung are using the waterdrop hinge mechanism like other Chinese manufacturers. The Z Fold5 and Flip5 now brings a gapless hinge, which not only looks aesthetic but also reduces the risk of display damage due to foreign objects getting in between while the device is folded.

Although, it’s reported that the display crease appears almost the same as last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The new waterdrop hinge design also makes the device slightly thinner and lighter. The Galaxy Z Fold5 is reported to be 0.2mm thinner and 10 grams lighter than it’s predecessor when unfolded. The Galaxy Z Flip5 is also expected to follow the same path due to the same hinge mechanism as the Z Fold5.

That being said, there are still two major problems with the folding technology preventing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 from being perfect.

Except the new hinge mechanism, there’s only some iterative improvements on the Z Fold 5 Which brings a question – Is the Z Fold 5 worth an upgrade over it’s predecessor?

As for performance, the devices feature the same custom-made Snapdragon 8 Gen2 for Galaxy chipset that we see inside the S23 Series.
