The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is reported to have a new hinge design that can somewhat resolve one of the biggest issues in foldable device which is the display crease.
The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5, set to launch in late July, will adopt the waterdrop hinge design. This new design apparently helps reduce the crease on the display. However, tipster @UniverseIce claimed that even with the waterdrop hinge, similar to other Chinese manufacturers, the display crease still persists significantly.
He adds that the crease is only 15% smaller than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and appears to be almost identical.
The crease on the display
The above image features the Galaxy Z Fold 4 on the left and the Oppo Find N2 on the right, both of which use the same kind of waterdrop hinge. The crease is noticeably more prominent from this angle on the fourth generation Samsung foldable.
It seems that we will have to wait a bit longer for Samsung to finally decrease the crease and match the competition. However, I would like to mention that the crease is only noticeable from certain angles like this, and it doesn’t appear as prominent when you are actually using the device.
Regarding the crease being familiar to the predecessor. It brings a question – Is the Z Fold 5 worth upgrading over the Z Fold 4?
Galaxy Z Fold 5 outer and inner display
Both the main and the outer display panels don’t have much of an improvement over the predecessor. The inner flexible display is a 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate i.e. same as last year. The outer display is a 6.2″ FHD+ AMOLED panel also with 120Hz refresh rate.
