The Galaxy S24 Ultra design changes: A flat display with titanium frame

Samsung is seemingly taking a page out of Apple’s design playbook. The Galaxy S Ultra lineup used to inherit its design from the past Galaxy Note lineup for the last two generations. However, it now appears that the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra is following Apple’s design trends more than ever.

Reportedly, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a flat display protected by a titanium frame, as opposed to the previously used aluminum alloy. Tipster @IceUniverse on Twitter has compared the Galaxy S24 Ultra to the Huawei Mate60 Pro in terms of their display bezels.

The image below shows that the display bezels appear to be significantly thicker on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. It’s especially visible due to the flat design. Although other aspects of the S24 Ultra such as the camera, seems to come with significant improvements along with a brighter 2500 nits peak brightness.

S24 Ultra curved vs flat display

However, it’s essential to note that this is still a rendered concept of the device based on the information revealed so far and not an actual image of the product. Nonetheless, @IceUniverse has a strong track record for accuracy in the information he shares. We will have to wait for an actual image of the device to be released.

Personally, I appreciate the subtle curve on the display, which not only makes gestures more enjoyable to use but also pleases the eye.

Furthermore, in line with Apple’s direction, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a titanium alloy frame. The advantage here is that titanium is more durable than aluminum, indicating better durability for the S24 Ultra.

Consequences of using titanium

Titanium is heavier than aluminum, and the S23 Ultra already weighs 234 grams. For context, the large-screen foldable Honor Magic V2 is 3 grams lighter than the S24 Ultra.

This 231g foldable also uses titanium, but only for its hinge cover, while the frame is made of a magnesium alloy, without which the 231g record would be impossible to achieve.

While the iPhone 15 lineup will also feature a titanium frame, Apple is making the switch from stainless steel, which was even heavier; so the iPhone 15 lineup will benefit from it.

But as previous Galaxy Flagships used aluminum, the titanium frame will add more to the 234g figure of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Probably, this is one of the reason why Samsung is switching to stacked batteries for the Galaxy S24 series.
