This is the slimmest foldable phone: It’s only 4.7mm when unfolded

Honor Magic V2

Foldable phones are normally thicker and heavier than the mainstream candy bar phones, having a complex folding mechanism. But as folding technology is improving, we are seeing foldable phones slowly catching up to candy bar phones in terms of weight and thickness.

The Honor Magic V2 is a perfect example of foldables becoming mainstream, measuring only 9.9mm thick when closed and 4.7mm when opened. Despite its slick form factor, the phone houses a 5000mAh silicon-carbon battery. It’s equipped with a dual-cell battery, each cell being only 2.7mm thick, thanks to the new battery technology.

Honor says the hinge can maintain the hovering state between 60°~110° after being folded for 12 hours. Although this isn’t as versatile as the Galaxy Fold 5’s new hinge, which can stay at a wider range of angles, it should be noted that the folding mechanisms of other brands are catching up to Samsung’s.

The company had to redesign pretty much all the components associated with the folding mechanism to meet the 4.7mm thickness. Besides the slick form factor, the phone is also lighter, weighing only 231 grams. For reference, it’s not only lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 but also the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Now that being said, the Honor Magic V2 seems like a revolution in the world of foldables especially when compared to the Galaxy Folds. Keeping aside the lead in the hardware level, the software experience of the Honor Magic series devices are also catching up.

Now, many of you might have this question – Is the Honor Magic V2 worth considering over the Galaxy Fold 5? We have discussed different aspects of the two devices to make it easier for you to make an informed decision.

Is the Honor Magic V2 durable?

The folding mechanism is built with titanium alloy to meet durability standards while remaining lightweight. The whole hinge mechanism is revised to reduce the number of moving parts, which not only makes the phone lighter but also makes it less prone to wear and tear.

The phone is rated for 400,000 folds, which means 100 folds a day for more than the next 10 years. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is rated at 200,000 folds. However, there isn’t an official rating for the ingress protection of the device.

The frame is made of a magnesium alloy, which also helps make the phone lighter while maintaining structural integrity.
